In his Black Dog Photography, Dutch photographer Maarten Kools (b. 1970) presents a high contrast stream of consciousness. Forming from the artist’s personal reaction to the death of a close friend, the series of images looks at the world through a conflicted state of certainty; though subjective and experiential, Black Dog sees things in black and white.
Kools shows us his seeking of answers to an unasked question; he interrogates meaning from inanimate objects, dead animals and bloodied people. He asks the trees to explain themselves. He demands of people, of objects, of spaces, that they answer what the hell they’re doing here. What do you mean? What does any of this mean?
A personal view on the world, Kools takes his camera, and us, along on his angst-filled stroll between life and death, white and black.
