White Night is the first monograph from Chinese photographer FENG Li (b. 1971), bringing together 160 images from his bold street photography shot between 2005 and 2015. “I don’t know whether they are photographic works, but they do present another side of our reality,” Feng Li writes about his work. “I can’t explain them specifically, as I can’t understand the world.” The images are thus true representations of his (and our) incomprehension of the world around – a radical and nonsensical mixture of peacocks and candles and laughter and rainbows and blood and tattoos and dance. Often shot with a hard flash, the photos are high-contrast questions asked at close range.

White Night is available from publisher Jiazazhi. Feng Li recently won the Discovery Award at the Jimei x Arles International Photofestival 2017 in China, where a selection of his work was exhibited.

White Night was featured in the Books section of GUP#56, the Transition issue.
