London based photographer Daniel Stier provides a “curious outsiders view into the world of science” as he documents the surreal reality of scientific research. Stier’s own investigations into existing and imagined experiments are combined with observations of academics testing self- built contraptions at research facilities across the US and Europe. Constructed with strong attention to detail and considered composition, the makeshift settings provide an unexpected contrast to modern, hi-tech labs commonly associated with this field.
This series is part of the book Ways of Knowing, in which Stier leaves interpretations of narrative open and draws parallels between the worlds of science and art. The inventive and creative nature of scientific research and environments subjects occupy demonstrate similarities in two industries that frequently conflict one another.
