American photographer Brian Merriam (b. 1982) looks with aching clarity at the American landscape in an alternative photographic roadtrip. Only occasionally stepping a toe into the romanticism or symbolism of the natural world encountered while travelling, he otherwise looks head-on at parts of the country that try to remain free of civilisation. The scene described in his own words: “More than a foot of snow had fallen while we slept in Wyoming. The seas of golden grass that covered the rolling hills of days prior were now blanketed in white. We headed back to Montana in another world.” Autobiographical by nature, Merriam’s work also occasionally includes the fellow travellers of his expeditions, but we focus here on his expression of the beauty of the base emotion of touching the untouched.
