British-born and Japan-based photographer Jacob Burge (b. 1981) explores the collision of nature and man-made objects in his series of photo-collages, entitled Recall. In his images, Burge brings together different manmade objects such as cars and computers with pieces of nature such as flowers and parks.
In juxtaposing a man sleeping in front of his laptop against the background of a bed of flowers, Burge draws our attention to both the overlaps between these two different spheres of humanity and also the vast contrast between them. The pieces of nature also seem to be idealized and the electronic and technological items such as computers and satellites appear to be portrayed in a negative light. A building with the word ‘Remember’ placed on it reinforces this idea that when in the midst of television and the internet it may be hard to remember the nature which is not present.
