Polish photographer Anna Grzelewska captures the “ambiguous and perturbing” nature of the transition from girl to woman, in the documentation of her daughter approaching adulthood.
This series does not focus on the sweet and innocent aspects of childhood so commonly portrayed. Nor are Grzelewska’s images those you would associate with a nostalgic family album. Instead she confronts the flaw-filled reality of a girl reckoning with the complications of a transition to adulthood. Julia’s initial encounters into this realm are filled with loneliness; exposed by her distant gaze, as these documentations are reinterpreted from the perspective of her mother. Uniting subtle observations and changes over time, Grzelewska attempts to capture the significant moment at which the transference from youth is complete.
