EDIFICE
CREDITS
Edifice is a visual journey back to a time most people would like to forget. Polish photographer Karol Palka (b. 1991) documents buildings that survived the Communist regime. The photographs show the interiors of the Polana Hotel, a closed holiday facility once owned by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, and the now unused office buildings for the management of the Nowa Huta Steelworks.
Edifice tells a story about power and its impermanence. By including photographs of feathers overflowing out of ripped pillows, banged up chairs, and worn out books to grand open spaces, Palka highlights the dissonance that exists between the power that was once there and the reality left behind by communism.
Palka’s project was awarded in the PDN Photo Annual competition (2016) and at the La Quatrieme Image Festival (2017).
