From November 22, 2019 to February 16, 2020 the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf is showing the work of five series from Magnum photographer Bieke Depoorter (b. 1986, Belgium). This constitutes the most comprehensive solo exhibition of the photographer to date.

Across these five different projects Depoorter explores current social issues and her role as a photographer. Encounters with people often function as the starting point of these series, and sometimes her camera documents her subjects over several years. She aims to find out whether one can capture the essence of a person through the means of photography and how to achieve true collaboration. It is often these joint narratives that ultimately define the outcome of Bieke’s initial curiosity for the dynamic between herself and the people she meets.

The exhibition will include works from Sète#15, Dvalemodus, As It May Be, Agata, and the ongoing project Michael – for which Depoorter started to inquire the activities of a man she met in Portland. Michael then handed her three suitcases filled with collages and scraps of writing, before disappearing – leaving no trace of his whereabouts. In new installations, Bieke applies her current examination of this rather abrupt’ vanishing.
