Nothing’s Coming Soon by Clay Maxwell Jordan, published by Fall Line Press, is a collection of portraits and landscapes depicting life as it is expressed in the southern state of Georgia. Shot over the course of five years and inspired by the Buddhist philosophy of “life is suffering”, the book aims to show the unconscious state of decay in which both people and places find themselves as they are busy looking forward or remembering the past. Shot entirely on film, Nothing’s Coming Soon ha a dual meaning: on one side “nothing” symbolises approaching death, on the other it plays with the American idea that a quick cure is available for any form of sickness, while in most cases change is gradual and acceptance necessary. An elegant sequence of images connected by fading colors and unique composition, Nothing’s Coming Soon is a meditation on the experience of ageing, but also an exploration on the themes of nostalgia, mortality, happiness and dreams.
