Learning to live in a new place can be a strange, disorientating process, especially if you move and have to adapt to an entirely new culture. Offcut, The Edge is the ongoing project from Chinese photographer Zhao Qian (1990), who moved from Shanghai to San Francisco in 2014 and has captured distant and strange images of the city, through the eyes of an outsider. The series mostly consists of areas photographed out of context, making them appear odd, such as what appears to be a senior citizen walking through a cloud of mist. His initial jetlag contributed to these off-kilter, brightly-coloured photographs of a world where hillsides are covered in black tarpaulin and plastic sharks float in mid-air. The artists aim to persuade the viewer to take a closer look at his images, in order to “investigate what might be there in that other dimension”.
