Contemporary Indian photography has suddenly caught the international eye, being omnipresent at photo festivals like Noorderlicht in Groningen and Recontres in Arles, and at special exhibitions held in New Jersey (Newark Museum) and London (Whitechapel Gallery). Away from the iconic and sometimes even cliché images of Indian everyday life, the focus is now more on an energetic, youthful India. Indeed, a Masala breeze is wafting through India’s visual culture and so GUP decided to make room for photographers who dare to take risks by moving towards a refracted, personal and playful use of the medium. Same stage, different drama.

The annual festival Photo Espaňa (PHE) is happening again, with this year’s exhibition programme concentrating on a wide variety of aspects that have never been off-topic but surely deserve renewed attention: female practitioners, adjusting the ‘canon’ with forgotten or less exposed talents, and concerns about the social and ecological environment. Before anything, though, it is a celebration of the width and range of what makes the medium of photography so rich and popular, and a festival like PHE successfully presents this potential to a larger audience.
