Between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia lies the River Axios sheltered on each side by thick woodland it provides the perfect location for many to illegally enter Greece. Fleeing from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan and seeking better lives for themselves and their families they come with little but still manage to leave ephemera behind. Constructing makeshift shelters they stop temporarily on the Greek border before moving on, deeper into a country troubled by the financial crisis and unemployment.

Dimitris Kleanthis (1985) went to these sites of habitation and extracted the remnants of life; and death, from the banks of the river. The symbolism of the river runs right through this work acting as a metaphor for the lives that cross each day and the turbulent corners where tragedy hides.

Bringing his education in criminology and political science to bear on the area, he subjects the banks of the Axios to a forensic investigation.
