Antonio Guerra (b. 1983) challenges our notion of nature, its symbolism, its meaning, and our relationship to it. Through his studies of landscapes, using installations, images within images, and by toying with perspective, he explores how our understanding of nature is produced and reproduced through images: we are always in dialogue with ourselves and with the objects we construct in our minds.
What makes Guerra’s study so interesting and important is that our relationship to nature is a crucial one, as it is through it that we come to define our own place in the order of the world. The artificial nature of his images highlights the artificiality of our own notion of nature; of the mother from which we came, and which we seem to want to distance ourselves from. And just as nature lies at the very origin of our species, landscape photography is inextricably linked to the birth of photography itself.
