“I can be anything I like but first I have to know what I have been and what I am” (Lucy R. Lippard)

Untitled, a new series by Ariane Johnston Breen, revolves around notions of transformation, self-realisation and mortality. By using the symbolic imagery of birds, and her own female figure seemingly transforming into a bird, Johnston Breen highlights an estranged metamorphosis that reflects on the nature of becoming – or being – a human. Untitled features fragments of the artist’s psyche – photos taken in pursuit of what she calls “the instinctive impulses of her unconscious”, exploring fundamental aspects of human psychology. By confronting the viewer with these images, Johnston Breen creates a unique language of symbolisms that asks for reflection, meanwhile speaking directly to the viewer’s unconscious and preserving the mystical character of her work.
