SELECTED WORKS BY SERGEY CHILIKOV

Despite the strict Soviet rules on how one should behave in public, Russians could do what they wanted in the safety of their own homes. This is exactly what attracted Sergey Chilikov (b. 1953, Russia) who since 1989 has been travelling across Russia and capturing different individuals in the privacy of domestic life. By portraying female and male nudity, he wanted to create a subversive response to the Soviet Stagnation Period (1964-1985), the time when economy and culture were oppressed by political leaders. His series Photo Provocations, The Countryside Glam, The Beach, The Gambling, The Philosophy of a Journey among others, depict the hidden erotic desires of tormented people that appear even more vital in the context of the depressing surroundings of the concrete suburbs.
Schilt Gallery in Amsterdam is exhibiting Selected Works by Sergey Chilikov, 20 April – 29 June 2019.
