SAME PLACE
CREDITS
Since the abolition of apartheid, South Africans have been working towards a more integrated society, where everyone lives together in one community, but there are still tensions and separation between races. Swiss photographer Claudio Rasano (1970) noticed the apparent divide and documented it in his series Same Place, a collection of portraits of the poorer people of Cape Town and Johannesburg and the areas they live in. The portraits are taken at eye-level, as Rasano was conscious of not looking down on his subjects, and they all wear a resilient look in their eyes, hardened by the situation they find themselves in. The images are straight-forward, without context or background and connected by the cool natural light of South Africa, creating a sober profile of the residents of this troubled country.
