Siberia is often seen as a symbol of extreme cold and isolation, or even synonymous with the gruelling punishment of the gulag. Today, however, the region takes on a new interpretation as people in Russia come to talk about it as a magical place for energetic and spiritual healing.

Sparsely populated and largely natural, Siberia is a land space ripe for connection with legend, where diverse spiritual leaders and seekers pursue mystic encounters in the lakes, rivers, forests and mountains. In the long-term project Magnit, Germany-based photographer Jewgeni Roppel (1983, Kazakhstan) studies five places of hope and desire for an era of renewed awakening in Western Siberia, offering his interpretation of the mystical spaces, symbols, objects and searching minds.
