Namibia is a country named after a desert, so it is quite easy to assume that the majority of land would be filled with desolate emptiness. Maroesjka Lavigne (1989, Belgium) photographed the sandy landscapes of Namibia in her series Land of Nothingness, capturing an eerie beauty in the softly-coloured dunes and roaming animals. Grey-blue skies and orange sand form the background, interrupted every now and then by a giraffe or brightly-hued bird, the desert is portrayed in a new light, an intriguing place where life does, in fact, exist. Lavigne says she was hypnotised by the landscapes, noting that the country “exists in another time zone. Time goes slower but feels more logical”, the odd gas station or road-side sign serving as the only reminder of an outside world.
