Jessica Thalmann (b. 1988, Canada) seeks to unravel the conventional relationship we have with photographic imagery and their material implications. Working with both her own images and archival materials, she prints, cuts, assembles and folds photographs into a sculptural form directly on the wall of the gallery. In some works, she re-flattens the object by capturing it again in a photographic form. Thalmann’s images, typically of brutalist architecture, defy straight readings, and demand the viewer’s participation in mentally constructing the buildings’ shapes, sizes and essential presence. They are re-interpretations of reality, which call into awareness the very illusion of reality that a photograph gives to us.
