For Slovak photographer Evelyn Bencicova (1992), the combination of academic knowledge, her interest in aesthetics and her will to communicate a strong and active message to the audience are the most important aspects of creating her work. In her photo series ‘Icon’, strong female characters from the past play the leading part. The models in the photographs represent saints and biblical characters, such as Agatha, Mary Magdalene, Saint Lucia, Elizabeth of Hungary and Judith. Bencicova portrays these characters with their traditional attributes, though using modern aesthetics.

Icon creates a hidden comparison between old Christian imagery and the current way of presenting female role models. Traditional attributes are no longer enthralling, and seem more like a method of packaging a commercial product. Bencicova aims towards a point in which the commercial and artistic meet.

Evelyn Bencicova was one of the 38 photographers selected for the shortlist of GUP#47, our 10th anniversary issue, for which an Open Call was held.
