We live in a time in which fame seems to be more achievable than ever, but for some, it remains just out of reach. Gianluca Abblasio (1977, Italy) follows one such hopeful in the series I Am Dario, about a man who works in a bingo hall in Rome by day, but transforms into a rock star at night. The charismatic protagonist lives a seemingly glamorous life, with fans and admirers fulfilling his need for attention, but the viewer is constantly reminded of banal reality. Dario’s latest gig was held in the bingo hall where he works, where he has no dressing room, so has to do his eyeliner in the car. His hopes are always quashed by sensibility and the photographer tells to a wistful story; one in which the viewer sees little chance of a happy ending.
