Dutch photographer Margaret Lansink (b. 1961) captures the reservations we have about opening ourselves up to other people and about our relationship with a world in which all moments seem to quickly fade. In her series, Hesitation, Lansink’s analogue photographs of empty rooms, nude women and the ocean, evoke feelings of uncertainty about exposing ourselves.

Lansink’s emphasis on shadows and on the traces people leave behind in different spaces speaks to the universal fear of getting to know someone and then having them disappear. Her long exposures highlight the anxiety we have about the evanescent nature of time. The grainy nature of her images illustrate the distortion between ourselves and the other people and places we encounter.
