EXPERIMENTAL RELATIONSHIP

As a woman brought up in China, photographer Pixy Yijun Liao (b. 1979) grew up thinking that the person she would love would be her protector, her mentor, someone older and more mature than she was. Yet she ended up meeting Moro, who is five years younger than she is. Because of this, Liao felt the concept of relationships changing for her as she became the person with more authority.
In 2007, Liao began experimenting with the settings of this relationship and would set up Moro and herself as part of the photographs. In the series Experimental Relationship, she explores all kinds of possibilities within the archetype of a heterosexual relationship. She sets out to play with norms, in search of her own way. What happens when the man and woman in a relationship choose to challenge their roles of sex and power?
