The series Dead Sea by Carlo Lombardi (b. 1988) centres on the endangered Carretta carretta sea turtle, showing us the main human activities that put the species at risk as well as the efforts to protect it in the Mediterranean. It is both a dispassionate and engaging look at one of the countless species that are in danger of disappearing completely.
Lombardi’s is an interesting take on environmental photography: the approach here seems both less emotionally manipulative and more psychologically honest than a lot of the photography focusing on environmental issues, where guilt seems to be the overriding emotion. These images are so powerful because they’re sober and not vindictive in the handling of their subject matter.
