What exactly can be read into an image that pairs a child’s fairy wand with a vibrator, which is then set next to an image of a cactus? Or, perhaps you too cringe at a sliced frankfurter, for some unfathomable reason. Jan Maschinski (b. 1983, Germany) channels visceral and innate reactions in his creation of this livid series entitled ‘Choke’. In theorising that there must be a line between bad taste and good taste, Maschinski turns the familiar into shockingly distasteful statements that both provoke and amuse. With bright colours, hyperreal stylings and minimalist composition, the images cut straight to the chase.
The innuendo is clear, as is the playfulness at work in his creative — and slightly twisted — mind. Just remember boys and girls to not play with knives; or badges for that matter…
