Hiro Tanaka (b. 1955, Japan) started taking photographs by chance. After entering a raffle in a Tokyo shopping mall, he won a free trip to the United States. Once there, he started to travel around with a punk band and to take pictures with his first camera, bought from one of the band members. Being on the road proved to be a very educational experience for Tanaka. The combination of repetition and random encounters taught him how time and space are relative things. The book Chicharrón is a direct reflection of his philosophy of life: he builds photo diptychs out of quite random scenescreating a perpetual rhythm of moving and standing still, the familiar and the unfamiliar – which reflects his own nomadic existence.
