A cat show is a judged event where the cat owners bring their prized pets in order compete for titles. The series Cat Shows, from New York-based photographer Beth Kleinpeter, grew out of her early experiences with showing cattle in the 4-H club as a young girl in South Louisiana. She started to photograph cat shows as part of a larger series that aims to explore and question the relationship between man and animal. For example: why it is that some people have the desire and/or need to exhibit and parade their animals in a show community? Are they driven by a need for perfection and prize-winning, or do they genuinely love their pets so much that they enter these contests as a means to strengthen that comradeship?

In sensitive and vibrant images, showing both cats and their companions, Kleinpeter expresses both the physical & psychological relationships at play.
