Akkar is a mountain area in Northern Lebanon where many Syrian refugees have found temporary homes in camps. French photographer Constance Proux (1991) together with her sister Philippine Proux captured portraits of some of the refugees living here, and collected their stories. The portraits are all taken in very different ways, from diffuse lighting to more snapshot quality using a flash, as if to emphasise the fact that none of their stories are the same. The series also contains photos of mundane things, which are in fact the objects that refugees considered their most important possessions. The landscape photos that are included in the series have a threatening atmosphere to them, as if we don’t know what we’re looking at exactly, and perhaps we’re not supposed to.
