From October 18 to 28, 2018, Fotofestival Schiedam hosts the sixth edition of its annual celebration of new photography, with activities ranging from exhibitions to screenings and talks by emerging and established visual artists coming from all over the Netherlands. The event is built around the theme of Re:Search, an invitation to re-evaluate the photographer as an explorer of old worlds with new eyes. With photography becoming more and more influential in defining how we think about the world and ourselves, Fotofestival Schiedam shows exciting ideas in the field of visual arts, offering the viewers the opportunity to redefine the meaning of what is familiar.

With almost thirty different exhibitions over the course of 10 days, this edition highlights the work of young photographers that have been creatively developing their storytelling techniques. Among the many names that compose the program is Sjoerd Knibbler (b. 1981), who shows his recent project Current Studies, consisting of a series of experiments the photographer executed in his studio by combining materials like plastic, glass or wood with substances such as smoke and dry ice to capture the balance between what is visible and what is not. Melissa Shriek (b. 1992) presents her series Promenade, a collection of images depicting city element that would normally go unnoticed in an urban environment, captured to remind us of our lack of awareness for smaller details cause by routine-driven lifestyles.

Nikon is also present in Schiedam with its Small World exhibition, a window into tiny universes that can be observed only through the lens of a microscope. With a curated selection of past submissions, this show highlights – for the first time in Europe – both the artistic and the scientific value of photomicrographs, the technical images normally collected for research purposes. Exhibiting the work of photomicrographers since 1975, Small World has become the leading forum for showcasing the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the microscope.

Next to the exhibitions, Fotofestival Schiedam offers a Fringe Progamme which involves a book presentation by Cleo Wächter in the Sint Jans Church, an opening party, a photo walk organised by Instawalk010 and the screening of the documentary Instant Dreams by filmmaker Willem Baptiste, which tells the story of the resurgence of Polaroid after the decision to quit film manufacturing in 2008.

Fotofestival Schiedam runs from October 18 to 28, 2018, in different venues throughout the town of Schiedam, the Netherlands.
