In his book Yesterday – Tomorrow, American-German photographic artist Marc Erwin Babejrevives the complex visual language of ancient Egyptian art and evolves it in photorealistic media. Babej adopts defining characteristics of Egyptian art and in doing so creates works of ‘aspective realism’, a term coined by the photographer, as a simultaneous representation of the human body from multiple perspectives. Babej’s black and white visual works are accompanied by academic essays written by Egyptologists. The book speaks to themes of power, memory and the progression of time. Images, words and symbols come together to paint a full picture of the rebirth of Egyptian iconography.
Yesterday – Tomorrow was featured in GUP#54, the Playful issue.
