Attention is often concentrated on the centre of things, but what happens further away from the limelight? Whether arriving from a curiosity for the expanded possibilities of photography, or from an interest in the underexposed aspects of daily life, the contributors to this issue of GUP all show an urge to move their eyes beyond the focal point and into the periphery.
Sohrab Hura is trying to make sense of his home country by looking at its physical outskirts in order to talk about India’s psychological state of being; duos Charalampidis & Charetaki and Caimi & Piccinni – each in their own way – attempt something similar for the island of Crete and the city of Rome, respectively. Anastasia Samoylova addresses the fragile shores of Florida, while Nadine Stijns & Amal Alhaag explore the post-colonial democracy of Somaliland.
Besides geography, time is also an aspect. Feyi Wen demonstrates an interest in the poetic fringes of memory to her family history; Nikita Teryoshin’s focus is on the cynical inception of warfare – by visiting military trade fairs.
The verges of photography are colourful, energetic and hyperreal – as reflected by Inez & Vinoodh, forerunners of digital photography – or by the talented Lakin Ogunbanwo. And, as always, GUP highlights what’s coming up, presenting the latest books, exhibitions and events from across the world.
